The Basic Gender Recipe

As a beginner, you can make the following simplifying assumptions on gender, which we will refer to as the basic gender recipe:

Examples: try to guess the gender of these random words

  1. ู…ูุฏูŽุฑู‘ูุณ
  2. ู…ูŽุฏุฑุณูŽุฉูŒ
  3. ู‚ุงุนูŒ
  4. ู‚ุงุนุฉูŒ
  5. ุฏูˆู„ุฉ
  6. ุฌูŠู‘ูุฏูŒ
  7. ุฌูŽูŠู‘ุฏุฉูŒ

Solution: [โ™‚๏ธ, โ™€๏ธ, โ™‚๏ธ, โ™€๏ธ, โ™€๏ธ, โ™‚๏ธ, โ™€๏ธ]

You may have noticed from these examples some pattern. The opposite is roughly a correct rule too but on adjectives:

Reversed adjectives

Finally, an important note is that noun/adjectives order is reversed: so to say "Good pen" in Arabic, first you say the noun then the adjectives.

Exercises: We learned basic words from previous lessons, let's review some and make sentences:

Adjective [m] Pronunciation Translation
ุฌูŽูŠู‘ูุฏูŒ jayyed[un] good
ุณูŽูŠู‘ูุฆูŒ sayye'[un] bad
ุฌูŽู…ููŠู„ูŒ jameel[un] beautiful

Exercises:

From the basic recipe we guess that ุจุญุฑ is masculine, and it should come before what describes it: ุฌู…ูŠู„. So the translation is: ุจูŽุญู’ุฑูŒ ุฌูŽู…ูŠู„ูŒ.

Girl in Arabic is "ุจู†ุชูŒ" which is feminine, so "ุฌู…ูŠู„" is converted to feminine by adding (ุฉ): ุจูู†ุชูŒ ุฌูŽู…ูŠู„ูŽุฉูŒ

This

  1. ู‡ูŽุฐูŽุง: haaแธa

Means "this" for a masculine noun. We will denote it by "this [m]" for short.

  1. ู‡ูŽุฐูู‡ู: haaแธehe

Means "this" for a feminine noun. We will denote it by "this [f]" for short.

Common mistake: ู‡ูŽุฐูู‡ู ends with a regular Haa (ู‡) not Taa Marbuta (ุฉ)

Notice that in both Arabic "this" words, there is no Alif like: (ู‡ุงุฐุง), (ู‡ุงุฐู‡) despite pronouncing it. Why is that? because "this" is so common that it became typical to drop its Alif.

Examples:

Good boy --> boy good --> ูˆูŽู„ูŽุฏูŒ ุฌูŠู‘ูุฏูŒ

This is a good boy --> ู‡ุฐุง ูˆูŽู„ูŽุฏูŒ ุฌูŠู‘ูุฏูŒ

Big sea --> sea big --> ุจูŽุญุฑูŒ ูƒูŽุจูŠุฑูŒ

This is a big sea --> ู‡ุฐุง ุจูŽุญู’ุฑูŒ ูƒูŽุจูŠุฑูŒ

To say this is a big sea, just add "this [m]".

Pronouns

1) Ana (I am)

Example1:

If you are a woman you choose the feminine version of "good":

  1. โ™‚๏ธ: ุฃู†ุง ุฌูŽูŠู‘ุฏูŒ
  2. โ™€๏ธ: ุฃู†ุง ุฌูŽูŠู‘ุฏุฉูŒ

Exercises: translate this in the comments.

2) Anta (You [m])

3) Ante (You [f])

4) Huwa (he)

5 Heya (she)

What about Am, Is, Are?

Arabic grammar is concise. Want to say "Sky is blue"? just put "blue" after "sky" in a sentence: "sky blue". Applying this concept, to say:

  1. I am good --> ุฃู†ุง ุฌูŠุฏ
  2. He is good --> ู‡ูˆ ุฌูŠุฏ
  3. She is good --> ู‡ูŠ ุฌูŠุฏุฉ

Notice in the last example, since "She" is feminine, we had to transform masculine adjective to feminine by adding (ุฉ).
